Introduction
Henry C. DeYoung (also known as Henry Chung and Chung Han Kyung) was a Korean-American scholar, diplomat, writer, and Independence fighter. He was one of the earliest Korean immigrants to the United States, arriving in 1905, and became a key intellectual and strategic force behind the Korean independence movement against Japanese colonial rule. With fluency in Korean, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, and English, DeYoung helped shape Korea’s diplomatic efforts, trained future leaders, wrote foundational texts, and preserved a remarkable archive documenting the Korean diaspora and the fight for Korean independence. As a professional photographer he documented everything before he died at age 95, leaving a legacy carried forward by his descendants and now preserved in a digitized collection at USC while the original collection is stewarded by his son Lee DeYoung.
헨리 C. 디영(한글 이름: 정한경, 영어 이름: 헨리 정)은 학자, 외교관, 작가이자 독립운동가로 활동한 재미 한인 1세대입니다. 1905년, 14세의 나이로 홀로 미국에 이민 와서 한국 독립운동의 지적, 외교적 중심 인물 중 하나로 활약했습니다. 한국어, 일본어, 중국어, 영어에 능통했던 그는 외교 전략을 수립하고, 차세대 지도자를 양성하며, 독립운동과 재미 한인 사회의 기록을 남기는 데 평생을 바쳤습니다. 또한 전문 사진작가로서 모든 활동을 기록했으며, 95세로 별세할 때까지 남긴 자료는 현재 USC 디지털 도서관에서 디지털 아카이브로 보존되어 있으며, 원본은 그의 아들 리 디영(Lee DeYoung)이 보관하고 있습니다.
